Women soldiers in the Israel Defence Forces claim they have broken one of the last bastions of male chauvinism in their country. For the first time women soldiers are being trained as instructors in the armoured corps.
SYNOPSIS: The women soldiers at the Israeli Defence Forces training camp say they have had to suffer a lot of jokes about women drivers on their way to learning how to control 55 tons of armour plated steel tank. Patton and Centurian tanks have begun a temporary new career with women at the controls. Altogether there are 21 girls who have been chosen from hundreds of women in the National Service in Israel to train as tank-crews.
The women have been training for more than two months now and most say they have enjoyed the experience although they did have reservations at first.
However none of the women will ever be part of a fighting tank unit. The Israeli army says it does not allow women in combat roles. Despite that their trainers say the girls have made excellent progress; and there seemed no problems in this demonstration of their new abilities.
The idea of the programme is to see if women could qualify as tank trainers in the event of war, and they are happy with their new role.
