The fashions house of Pierre Balmain opened its doors to the World's press and news media on Tuesday (16 July), to present Monsieur Balmain's new collection of clothes for 1975. Monsieur Balmain himself was on hand to describe his creations for the fashion writers and the cameramen.
M. Balmain said he had based the theme of the collection on the energy shortage and the power cuts it might well cause. Because of these current problems, he felt that people now had a psychological fear of the cold, os in his designs he had used a lot of fur and considerable amounts of heavy and soft tweed. For the daytime he had used rather light colours, but for evening wear, colours were dark and romantic.
There were no afternoon dresses in the collection because women no longer seemed to be wearing them. So fashion in 1975 would be dominated by two styles - casual clothes and cocktail and evening dresses.
Balmain is the first leading house of French high fashion to give a franchise to a British company to manufacture its complete ready-to-wear collection, including day and evening wear, sports wear, separates and accessories. It is the first time a French fashion house of such standing has allowed a British company the international rights to manufacture its clothes outside Paris. The British company - Mandarin Collections - will make the French couture garments in the British crowd colony of Hong Kong.
