    THE ARGENTINE GOVERNMEMT BEGAN CONFISCATING PRIVATE BUSES ON FRIDAY (29 NOVEMBER), IN AN EFFORT TO END THE TWO DAY STRIKE BY BUS OWNERS WHICH HAD BEEN CALLED IN SUPPORT OF A LONG-STANDING DEMAND FOR INCREASED FARES. BY THE END OF THE DAY THE 25,000 PRIVATE BUSES IN THE CAPITAL HAD BEGUN OPERATING AGAIN.

    THE STRIKE ENDED WITH ONE BUS DRIER HAVING BEEN KILLED, SEVEN OTHERS INJURED, AND 36 BUSES DAMAGED IN INCIDENTS.

    THE MAN WHO DIED HAD BEEN HELPING THE GOVERNMENT BREAK THE STRIKE. THE BUS HE WAS DRIVING CRASHED INTO A SCHOOL AFTER BEING STONED. FOUR PASSENGERS WERE INJURED IN THE CRASH.

    THE GOVERNMENT HAD DECLARED THE STRIKE ILLEGAL. IT HAD STARTED ON THURSDAY, BUT THE NEXT DAY - WHEN IT HAD LASTED 36 HOURS - A GOVERNMENT STATEMENT SAID THE DISPUTE HAD BEEN STEELED. NO FURTHER DETAILS WERE GIVEN.

    THE BUS WORKERS UNION HAD SAID THAT ITS MEMBERS SUPPORTED THE GOVERNMENT, AND HAD AGREED TO DRIVE THE BUSES THAT HAD BEEN CONFISCATED FROM THE PRIVATE OWNERS.

    DURING FRIDAY - THE SECOND DAY OF THE STRIKE - ABOUT A HUNDRED BUSES RAN EMERGENCY SERVICES. IN THE MORNING RUSH HOUR THE STREETS OF BUENOS AIRES WERE CLOGGED WITH EXTRA TRAFFIC, BUT THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE STILL HAD TO WALK TO WORK.
