Background: INDUSTRIAL EXPANSION IN GHANA....WHERE ON SATURDAY AN ULTRA-MODERN GBP800,000 FACTORY WITH AN ESTIMATED OUTPUT OF 4 1/2 MILLION JUTE FIBRE BAGS A YEAR WAS OFFICIALLY OPENED BY THE MINISTER OF INDUSTRIES, MR IMORU EGALA.

MR EGALA SAID THAT THE FACTORY, AT KUMASI IN ASHANTI PROVINCE, WILL INITIALLY EMPLOY 600 WORKERS, AND WILL PROVIDE 75 PER CENT OF GHANA'S ANNUAL REQUIREMENTS FOR COCOA BAGS.AND PLANS WERE IN HAND FOR AN EXPANSION PROGRAMME WHICH WOULD PROVIDE FOR THE REMAINING 25 PER CENT AS WELL AS STORAGE FOR OTHER CROPS AND CEREALS.

THE MINISTER SAID THE FACTORY WOULD REQUIRE 4,5000 TONS OF RAW MATERIALS A YEAR FOR PROCESSING.THOSE MATERIALS COULD NOW BE GROWN IN MANY PARTS OF THE COUNTRY THEREBY SAVING ABOUT GBP200,000 A YEAR I FOREIGN EXCHANGE.

MR.R.O.AMUAKO-ATTA, THE ASHANTI REGIONAL COMMISSIONER, DESCRIBED THE OPENING OF THE FACTORY AS A SIGNIFICANT LANDMARK IN THE COUNTRY'S INDUSTRIALISATION PROGRAMME.

THE OPENING CEREMONY CONCLUDED WITH A LIBATION BEING POURED ON THE GROUND NEAR THE CEREMONIAL TAPE BY AN ASHANTI CHIEF, NANA AKYEMPIMHENE OF KUMASI.AFTERWARDS OFFICIAL GUESTS AND VISITORS TOURED THE FACTORY AND SAW THE BAG MAKING MACHINES, DELIVERED FROM NORTHERN IRELAND, BEING OPERATED BY AFRICAN WORKERS.
