    NINETEEN YEAR OLD AMERICAN NEGRO, GEORGE FOREMAN, ON SATURDAY GAINED THE OLYMPIC HEAVYWEIGHT BOXING GOLD MEDAL WHEN HE STOPPED RUSSIA'S JONAS CHEPULIS IN THE SECOND ROUND. IT WAS A FAST AND FURIOUS BOUT. BLOOD SPURTED FROM CHEPULIS' NOSE BEFORE THE REFEREE AWARDED THE FIGHT TO FOREMAN AFTER TWO MINUTES 33 SECONDS OF THE SECOND ROUND.

    FOREMAN, A 19 YEAR CALIFORNIAN, WAS ALWAYS ON TOP. HE WENT AFTER THE RUSSIAN FROM THE OPENING BELL. ALTHOUGH HE HAD NO CHANCE TO USE HIS DEADLY RIGHT HAND IN THE FIRST ROUND HE DROPPED CHEPULIS WITH A SERIES OF LEFT JABS TO THE HEAD.

    THE RUSSIAN MINER ENDED THE ROUND WITH HIS NOSE BLOODIED AND FOREMAN SERVED UP SIMILAR TREATMENT IN THE SECOND AS HE CONTINUED TO TAKE THE POINTS IN A BRAWLING TYPE OF CONTEST.

    FOREMAN, WINNER OF 21 OF HIS PREVIOUS 24 BOUTS, COULD WIN THE WORLD PROFESSIONAL TITLE WITHIN TWO YEARS, ACCORDING TO BOXING EXPERTS.

    HE WON THE FIRST OF TWO BOXING GOLD MEDALS FOR THE UNITED STATES WHO ALSO WON FOUR BRONZES. THE SOVIET UNION WON THREE GOLDS, TWO SILVERS AND ONE BRONZE.
