  • Description

Treacherous mud and icy water were only two of the hazards joyfully suffered by competitors in the British Army 'Skill on Wheels' Rough Riding Championships at Bordon, Hampshire, Dec 5.

Land Rovers, motorcycles, and snorkel equipped trucks, were skilfully, but dangerously driven over uneven terrain fraught with tree stumps, and axle breaking gullies.

Outstanding spectacle was presented by the snorkel equipped trucks as they forded a 5-ft deep pond. Waist deep in water, the drivers continued to guide their submerged vehicles safely across the marked-out course.

Entrants came from the 1st and 3rd Divisions; the Parachute Brigade; the Royal Automobile Club Driving and Maintenance School, and the eventual winners - the Army Mechanical Transport School.
