  • Description

As North Vietnamese troops continue their offensive in the northern regions of South Vietnam below the Demilitarised Zone, South Vietnamese troops have been reinforcing small towns between Quang Tri and Dong Ha.

One armoured convey, enroute to Cam Lo from Dong Ha, ruptured a North Vietnamese soldier last Thursday (April 20). He use wounded in the arm and in the leg, and carried a small arsenal of weapons.

The North Vietnamese soldier volunteered no information on communist troop movements in the area, and, under interrogation by South Vietnamese troops, refused to give details on the strength of North Vietnamese units operating in the region.

It was in Quang Tri province that the three-week old communist offensive first began. Since then, 150,000 refugees have been driven from their homes in that northern-most province.

Now the Saigon government is trying to make many of the towns which bore the brunt of the early fighting safe enough for the refugees to return home.

SYNOPSIS: South Vietnamese troops have been busy reinforcing small towns in Quang Tri, the long-battered province just below the Demilitarised Zone where the three-week old communist offensive first began. This armoured convoy was on a mission to reinforce the town of Cam Lo west of Dong Ha. On the way they captured a North Vietnamese soldier.

He was captured carrying a small arsenal of weapons, including rifles and a machine-gun.

The solider, wounded in the arm and in the leg, was interrogated on the spot by South Vietnamese troops. Despite rigorous questioning, the prisoner refused to give details on the size and location of North Vietnamese units operating in the area.

Later, the prisoner was taken south for more questioning. Government troops hope to make this area safe enough for thousands of refugees to return to their homes.
