  • Description

THE CONTROVERSIAL PORTON DOWNS MICROBIOLOGICAL RESEARCH ESTABLISHMENT AT PORTON DOWNS, ENGLAND WAS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC TODAY (WEDNESDAY), FOLLOWING PROTESTS THAT IT HAD BEEN USED FOR GERM WARFARE RESEARCH. THE RESEARCH STATION HAS BEEN THE SCENE IN RECENT MONTHS OF ANGRY DEMONSTRATIONS BY PEOPLE CLAIMING THAT IT HAD BEEN USED TO DEVELOP MATERIALS FOR WAR, AND HAD TAKEN PART IN EXTENSIVE ANIMAL VIVISECTION.

FIVE HUNDRED VISITORS WERE ABLE TO WANDER UNESCORTED THROUGH THE LABORATORIES, ALTHOUGH THEY WERE BARRED FROM THOSE MARKED "TOXIC AREAS", WHICH WERE SAID TO CONTAIN DANGEROUS MATERIALS.

MANY OF THE DISPLAYS DEALT WITH METHODS OF DETECTING AND COUNTERING THE EFFECTS OF GERM WARFARE, BUT MOST WERE CONCERNED WITH MICROBIOLOGICAL PROBLEMS THAT OCCUR UNDER PEACE-TIME CONDITIONS.

THE ESTABLISHMENT SENT INVITATIONS TO 3,500 PEOPLE TO SEE OPERATIONS AT PORTON DOWN, AND 1,500 ACCEPTED. THE LABORATORIES WILL BE OPEN AGAIN TOMORROW AND ON FRIDAY.
