Background: THE ZAMBEZI RIVER, SECOND LARGEST WATER-COURSE IN ZAMBIA, HAS MANY FUNCTIONS TO PERFORM WITHIN THE COUNTRY. ONE OF ITS MAJOR USES IS NATURALLY IRRIGATION -- BUT UNFORTUNATELY IT DOESN'T ALWAYS RUN WHERE THE WATER IS NEEDED. SUCH IS THE CASE OF THE KAFUE FLATS, WHERE 17,000 ACRES OF SUGAR-CANE HAVE JUST RECEIVED A NEW LEASE OF LIFE, THANKS TO THE TECHNOLOGIES OF MODERN IRRIGATION.

NATURE HAS CUT MANY CANALS ACROSS THE KAFUE FLATS, BUT IT NEEDS A HELPING HAND TO RAISE THE WATER TO HIGHER LEVELS OF THE SUGAR PLANTATION. IN A RECENT CEREMONY ZAMBIA'S MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE, MR. E. MUDENDA, PERFORMED THE OFFICIAL CEREMONIES WHICH SET IN MOTION THE NEWLY INSTALLED PUMPING MACHINERY. AT NUMBER 1 STATION, THE MINISTER PRESSED A BUTTON WHICH OPERATED THE PUMPING SYSTEM, AND UNVEILED A MEMORIAL PLAQUE.

AT NUMBER 2 STATION, THE MINISTER WAS ABLE TO SEE THE PUMPS IN ACTION, PUMPING THE WATER ALONG PIPES TO THE HIGHER CANALS. WITH HIM WERE SEVERAL DIGNITARIES OF THE SUGAR WORLD -- LORD LYLE OF WESTBOWNE, CHAIRMAN OF WORLD SUGAR ESTATES, MR. J. P. WILLSHER, VICE-CHAIRMAN, MR. G. R. BURDEN, DEPUTY CHAIRMAN, MR. C. H. MUTALE, DIRECTOR OF AGRICULTURE, AND THE GENERAL MANAGER OF THE SUGAR ESTATE.
