  • Description

PARIS COMMUTERS TODAY (THURSDAY) BEAT A PARTIAL RAIL STRIKE, USING CARS, BUSES, AND 400 SPECIALLY PROVIDED ARMY LORRIES TO GET TO WORK.

THE 48 HOUR STRIKE BEGAN AT MIDNIGHT AND IS PART OF A NATIONWIDE TRADE UNION CAMPAIGN FOR MORE PAY AND BETTER WORKING CONDITIONS IN A NUMBER OF INDUSTRIES AND SERVICES.

RAIL OFFICIALS SAID THAT SUBURBAN LINES, FEARED TO BE THE HARDEST HIT, RAN MORE TRAINS THAN EXPECTED. PORTERS AT MAIN LINE STATIONS SAID; "IT'S NOT THE TRAINS THAT ARE MISSING BUT THE PASSENGERS."
THE STRIKE, WHICH IS BEING BOYCOTTED BY ONE UNION, IS THE LATEST IN A SERIES WHICH BEGAN TWO DAYS AGO WITH TOKEN STOPPAGES IN THE PRIVATE CHEMICAL, CONSTRUCTION, METAL AND TEXTILE INDUSTRIES. YESTERDAY POST OFFICE WORKERS, WHO STRUCK LESS THAN A MONTH AGO, DECIDED ON FURTHER STRIKE ACTION BECAUSE THE GOVERNMENT TURNED DOWN ITS PAY CLAIM.

UNIONS FOR CIVILIAN ARMY EMPLOYEES YESTERDAY CALLED FOR A STRIKE ON MARCH 29TH BY WORKERS IN ARSENALS AND OTHER MILITARY ESTABLISHMENTS.

OTHER STRIKES ARE THREATENED AMONG GAS AND ELECTRICITY WORKERS, TEACHERS, BANK EMPLOYEES, CIVIL SERVANTS AND THE PARIS BUS AND METRO STAFFS.
