Airport Hotel, opposite London Airport, was opened today by the wife of America's Ambassador, Mrs. David Bruce. The hotel is ultra-modern. There are 300 sound-proofed, air-conditioned rooms, all with private bedrooms. It has a shopping centre, food bars and an outdoor heated swimming pool.
The hotel stands in ten acres of ground and has a staff of 230. A feature is a 12-foot long plateglass wall in the lobby decorated with the signs of the zodiac in gold leaf. The panel is inset with 11 clocks showing the times in various cities in the world.
The hotel was built by Fortes and Company, the national catering organisation. The parent company was formed by Mr. Charles forte in 1936. The general manager is Mr. A.C.M.Gelardi, previously a prominent hotelier in South Africa. Mr. Charles Forte introduced Mrs. Bruce in the airport opening ceremony, Manager is Canadian-born Monia S. Rynderman.
