    TIN CITY AIR FORCE SITE IN ACROSS THE BERING STRAIT FROM SIBERIA, AND IS ONE OF SIX SITES IN ALASKA WHERE PERSONNEL COMMUTE BY TRAMWAY RUNNING FROM THE LOWER CAMP TO THE MOUNTAIN TOP RADAR SITE, THE DISTANCE FROM THE LOWER TRAM TERMINAL TO THE RADAR SITE IS 7,500 FEET WITH AN ELEVATION OF 2,300 FEET THE LOWER CAMP AND 3,300 FEET ABOVE SEA LEVEL.

    AIRMEN WORK AT THE HILLTOP RADAR SITE FOR VARYING PERIODS. NEWLY CONSTRUCTED TOWERS CONTAIN A STORAGE TANK FOR ANTI-FREESE IN THE OVERHEAD SECTION OF THE TUBULAR TOWER. WHEN ICING CONDITIONS OCCUR THE ANTI-FREEZE IS RELEASED BY VALBES AND DEICES THE TOWER.

    AFTER THE COLD WINTER COMES TO A CLOSE AND THE WIND SETTLES FOR A DAY OR TWO, PERSONNEL STATIONED AT REMOTE SITES BUSY THEMSELVES CLEARING THE EXITS OF THE LOWER CAMP BARRACKS. SNOW THAT HAS PILED UP AS HIGH AS THE TOP OF THE BUILDING IS CLEARED AWAY FROM THE EXITS AND WINDOWS. ALL AVAILABLE PERSONNEL TAKE PART IN "OPERATION SNOW SHOVEL."
