  • Description

Tennis is becoming popular in China. And in Japan a major boost has been given to China's international playing reputation with the victory of Yu Li Chiao over Australian Mary Sawyer in the women's singles of the Japanese tennis Championship.

SYNOPSIS: Yu Li Chiao is one of the first Chinese women in recent years to win a reputation as a strong consistent player. In the first round of the women's singles at the Japan open the beat Australia's mary Sawyer 6-4 2-6 7-5.

Mary Sawyer's play slipped late in the match to give victory to the Chinese.

Two women and two men players represent China at the Championships and they hope to gain greater opportunities to take part in international tennis in the future. The President of the International Tennis Federation M. Philippe Chatrier has announced that China has asked for readmission to the Federation.

While Chinese players find victory on the courts, Chinese tennis hopes to find success in its bid for greater international recognition. M. Chatrier says that with tennis now as popular in China as in many other countries, he hopes Chinese players will be able to take part in Davis Cup play in 1981.
