Background: The Paterson chimney was built in 1850 for a silk mill, and stood incongruously alone on the far side of the Passaic River long after the silk mill had gone. Few residents of Patterson today member that mill, the old Pilgrim Mayors plant, but the chimney has been a landmark for generations.

Nearly five hundred occupants of low-rent houses in the shadow of the chimney were evacuated today for the demolition job. The first dynamite charge was not enough even to budge the solidly constructed old chimney; another charge, and still 'no dice', and then, third times lucky. This gallant old bridge, which had survived 108 years and two charges of dynamite, finally toppled, sinking gracefully in a shower of bricks and rubble.

The last remnant of the ancient Paterson silk industry was gone; and the way was opened for a brand new building housing project to rise from the ruins;
