  • Description

OVER A PINT OF BEER IN ONE OF THE PUBS IN LIVERPOOL, BRITAIN, 28-YEAR-OLD JIM HUTCHIN, JOKINGLY TOLD HIS TWO COMPANIONS -- ALL COMMERCIAL TRUCK DRIVERS, "WON'T IT BE FUN TO SEE THE WORLD?" AFTER DOWNING A FEW MORE PINTS, THEY ALL AGREED AND DECIDED TO TRAVEL OVERLAND. THEY POOLED THEIR ASSETS AND BOUGHT A LANDROVER AND STOCKED UP AMPLE PROVISIONS FOR THEIR SOJOURN AROUND THE GLOBE.

ALL THIS HAPPENED IN AUGUST, 1963 WHEN JIM HUTCHINS, LEADER OF THE GROUP, NORMAN WILLIAMS, 22 AND COLIN COAD, 24, HANDED IN THEIR RESIGNATIONS TO THEIR RESPECTIVE BOSSES.

THEIR FIRST STOP WAS DOVER. THE ADVENTUROUS TRUCK DRIVERS THEN TRAVELLED TO FRANCE, SWITZERLAND, ITALY, YUGOSLAVIA, ROME, TURKEY, IRIAN, WEST PAKISTAN AND INDIA.

FROM MADRAS, SOUTH INDIA, THEY TOOK A BOAT TO PENANG, AN ISLAND NORTH-WEST OF MALAYA AND TRAVELLED DOWN TO SINGAPORE. ALL TOGETHER, THEY CHALKED UP A TOTAL OF 10,500 MILES BY ROAD AND 1,800 MILES BY SEA.

THE TRUCK DRIVERS, WHO WERE ALSO MEMBERS OF THE 12/13 BATTALION PARACHUTE REGIMENT, BRITISH TERRITORIAL ARMY, DID A TOUR OF DUTY IN CYPRUS EARLIER THIS YEAR. THROUGHOUT THEIR TOUR, THEY ONLY ENCOUNTERED PUNCTURES.

AFTER THEIR SIGHT-SEEING TOUR OF SINGAPORE AND THE VISITS TO BRITISH ARMY CAMPS, THEY BOARDED A SHIP ON OCTOBER 8 FOR FREMANTLE, AUSTRALIA, FROM WHERE THEY ARE EXPECTED TO TRAVEL TO PERTH TO JOIN THE AUSTRALIAN ARMY.
