  • Description

Schoolboys in Melbourne, trained in the art of road safety, are saving lives on their own initiative: the operate a barrier specially rigged across the road to allow their schoolmates to cross in safety.

These boys were selected at East Bentleigh School, near Melbourne, to put up outside their school this traffic barrier with a red and white flag attached near the end. Under the watchful eye of parents the boys swing-out one barrier. Then they cross to fix a boom on the other side.

Their schoolchums wait for the boys to swing the two long booms out across the road, stopping all motor traffic. The booms will be used whenever school children want to cross the road in safety.

The Barrier will be given a month's trial at Bentleigh East and if satisfactory it will be introduced throughout Victoria. The booms are not suitable for general pedestrian crossings because they must be taken down each night.
