Background: French Communist Party leader Georges Marchais arrived in Beirut on Tuesday (15 April) at the start of a two-day visit to Lebanon. On his arrival Mr. Marchais was met by Lebanese leftist and Palestinian Commando leaders.
SYNOPSIS: During his stay in Beirut Mr. Marchais will hod talks with Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) leader Yasser Arafat as well as Lebanese President Elias Sarkis. Speaking at an airport news conference Mr. Marchais said he believed France should officially recognise The Palestine Liberation Organisation as the representative of the Palestinian people.
Mr. Marchais said France could play a more active role in contributing to the resolution of the Middle East crisis. He maintained the interests of the Palestinians were legitimate and corresponded to the interests of every person who believes in freedom and peace. Mr. Marchais added he was also in favour of a free Lebanese state.
