  • Description

Five black African Presidents ended two days of talks on southern Africa on Tuesday (7 September) with a pledge to further intensify what their final communique called the "armed struggle in Zimbabwe" - the African name for Rhodesia.

SYNOPSIS: The summit meeting, which was held in Dar es-Salaam, Tanzania, was attended by African nationalists from Rhodesia, Namibia and South Africa. Together with the Presidents of Angola, Botswana, Mozambique, Tanzania and zambia - the five countries surrounding Rhodesia - the nationalists has hoped to find a peaceful solution to the Rhodesian issue. With the final communique pledging to intensify the use of arms, diplomats in Dar es-Salaam expressed the view that this would be a long time coming.

The summit meeting failed in one of its main purposes when it ended without reconciling the feuding factions of the Rhodesian african National Council. The five Presidents conferred with the Council's leaders for most of the opening day's session, leaving them at about two in the morning to allow them to try and thrash out their differences, but to no avail.

Evidence of a major split in the Council first came to light when the Zimbabwe African Peoples Union, the salisbury-based faction of the Council, withdrew from the guerrilla army fighting in Rhodesia. This left the guerilla war in the hands of the Zimbabwe African National Union, the eternal faction of the Council.

Among those attending the meeting was Oliver Tambo, leader of the banned African National Congress of South Africa. His attendance at the meeting confirmed speculation that the summit was also due to touch on the current rioting and unrest in South Africa.
