    INTRODUCTION Portuguese Prime Minister Mario Soares made a semi-official visit to the United Nations on Tuesday (19 April) in an effort to clear up some problems affecting the former Portuguese colony of Angola, and Portugal's relations with China. The latter arises from Portugal's occupation of Macao, off mainland China.

    SYNOPSIS: Before their official talks, Dr Soares and his aides were introduced to United Nations Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim. And with the United states taking an increasing role as spokesman for western world, the Portuguese delegation also received an important introduction to U.S. ambassador andrew Young. Dr Soares had gone to the U.N. to ask Dr Waldheim to help Portugal establish full relations with China. Through an interpreter, the Portuguese Prime Minister also spoke of his concern over events in Zaire, which could affect neighbouring Angola, a former Portuguese colony.
