Background: GALES BRINGING TORRENTIAL RAIN, SNOW AND ICE HAVE LASHED BRITAIN TODAY (SUNDAY). SOME OF THE WORST WEATHER IN 35 YEARS HAS BROUGHT HAVOC TO MOSTLY WESTERN AND NORTHERN PARTS OF THE COUNTRY.

AFTER A WEEK OF WIDESPREAD FLOODING, RAILWAY LINES WERE CUT, ROADS BLOCKED AND VILLAGES MAROONED AS SWIRLING FLOODWATERS ROSE TO SIX FEET (TWO METRES). IN SEVERAL DISTRICTS, SCHOOLS HAVE BEEN OPENED AS EMERGENCY FEEDING CENTRES FOR THE HOMELESS.

IN NORTH WALES, THE WOLLEN RIVER SEVERN OVERFLOWED ITS BANKS AND SWEPT THROUGH THE TOWN CENTRE. DRAINS EXPLODED UNDER TREMENDOUS PRESSURE FROM FLOODWATERS, HURLING LUMPS OF ROAD AND PAVING STONES HIGH IN THE AIR.

A GOLF CLUB ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF MANCHESTER WAS CUT OFF: IT WAS ALMOST COMPLETELY UNDER WATER WITH ONLY THE FLAGS SHOWING ABOVE THE SURFACE. RESCUERS WERE OUT IN BOATS COLLECTING STRANDED PEOPLE AFTER THE HEAVIEST WINTER RAIN IN 80 YEARS. TWO INCHES FELL IN A DAY, BUT THE CITY'S AVERAGE IS 3 INCHES A MONTH.

IN SCOTLAND, FARM WORKERS HAVE BEEN SPENDING THE WEEKEND RESCUING LIVESTOCK ENDANGERED BY THE FLOOD WATERS. THERE HAS BEEN LITTLE LOSS OF STOCK SO FAR.

METEOROLOGISTS SAY THAT THE BAD WEATHER IS MOVING EASTWARDS TOWARDS THE CONTINENT. EARLIER TODAY, A BRITISH COLLIER WAS DRIVEN AGROUND WITH ENGINE TROUBLE BETWEEN THE BREAKWATERS AT IJMUIDEN, HOLLAND. A LIFEBOAT BRAVED HIGH SEAS TO TAKE OFF THE CREW BEFORE THE VESSEL WAS REFLOATED.
