  • Description

Belgium's 5-day Liege-Rome-Liege motor rally - "Le Marathon de la Route" - is the most exhausting of all qualifying events in the European Championships. The arduous 3200-mile route entails some 92 hours of non-stop driving and much of it is over difficult mountain roads. On the second day, September 1, competitors travelled from the German control point of Lindau through Austria to Passo de Resia in Italy.

The retirement rate of drivers from the rally is usually about 66 per cent. Next day the competitors - from Belgium, France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland and Britain - were due to face a long hazardous drive over Yugoslavian and Italian mountains.
