Background: The Chilean Truck-Owners' Federation began a strike on Thursday (26 July) in Santiago and Valparaiso that threatened to cripple the country's economy.

The strike by the owners against the coalition government of Marxist President Salvador Allende took 45,000 trucks from the road -- the backbone of the nation's transport system. The strike threatens to further complicate a political situation that is threatened with economic chaos, largely prompted by opponents of the President.

Patrol rationing in major cities was among the first of its effects, and food shortages were expected if the strike continued.

The government, which declared the strike was "artificial and political", hit back at the truck owners by requisitioning 1,000 idle trucks.
