The South African Foreign Minister, Mr Pik Botha, has declared that his country can, and will, remove injustices and iniquities.
CU South African Foreign Minister Pik Botha speaking in English
BOTHA: "The Prime Minister (Mr Pieter Botha) has in mind that we should get rid of certain laws and legislation, and certain measures which do not serve the purpose any more -- measures that are seen to be humiliating by the black people."
INTERVIEWER: "What kind of laws?"
BOTHA: "Well, we have removed already quite a large number. Unfortunately, the world doesn't take notice of this. In the labour field, it will take me two hours to explain to you what has happened in the labour field, it will take me two hours to explain to you what has happened in the labour field alone in this country. The right of blacks now to join mixed trade unions i this country; the question of the narrowing of the wage gap; the removal of wage differentiation based on colour. I can go on. As far as job reservation is concerned, that has been removed from the statute book. Blacks are getting now equal opportunity in this country. These are the adaptations: in sport, in theatres, in the opening up of restaurants. There are a large number, a large number of dramatic changes that have taken place. But, you see, the strategies of our enemies, and the ignorance of some of our friends, including in Finland, preclude them from acknowledging this. Because the more we do, the more is demanded. And there is one thing we cannot accede to: and that is to surrender. We will not do this. We can remove harmful discrimination based on colour. I've stated so years ago in the Security Council. It took time for our public to get used to it, but they have come to accept it, by and large. We can do that. But there is one thing that we cannot remove; and that is the will of the white people. Not to be whites as such, but to live according to their norm and standards, a proper life without suppressing or oppressing other people merely because of the colour of their skin."

Background: The South African Foreign Minister, Mr Pik Botha, has declared that his country can, and will, remove injustices and iniquities. But, he said, the one thing that could not be removed was the will of the white people to live according to their standards.
