  • Description

IN SURINDER, A SMALL TOWN IN THE KORAT PLATEAU OF NORTH-EASTERN THAILAND, AN "ELEPHANT ROUND-UP", A SHOW SPECIALLY PUT ON FOR TOURISTS, WAS STAGED RECENTLY. SPECTATORS TRAVELLED IN SPECIAL TRAINS FROM THE CAPITAL, BANGKOK. THE LOCAL MAHOUTS AND THE TOURIST DEPARTMENT MADE IT A SPECIAL OCCASION THIS YEAR.

THE ELEPHANT IS A COMMON ANIMAL IN THAILAND, AND IS THE LIVE VERSION OF A BULL-DOZER FOR THE LUMBER INDUSTRY. TOWARDS THE END OF THE LAST CENTURY, THAILAND HAD ABOUT 20,000 ELEPHANTS, BUT THE FIGURE NOW IS ABOUT HALF. THAILAND IS SO INTERESTED IN PRESERVING THE ANIMALS, THAT HUNTING OR KILLING ELEPHANTS WAS BANNED IN 1951. EXPORTS TO ZOOS ARE ALSO RARE.

THE SHOW FEATURED THE OLDER AND TRAINED ELEPHANTS CHASING THE WILD ONES IN THE FORESTS, CORNERING AND TYING THEM DOWN FOR SOME DAYS BEFORE THEY ARE TRAINED FOR USEFUL WORK. THE CHASE AND ROUND-UP TOOK PLACE IN A FIELD.
