Enthusiasts of rowing have always worn caps and blazers to the Henley Royal Regatta, but this year the "rowing types" are the height of fashion, thanks to the release of the film version of Scott Fitzgerald's novel "The Great Gatsby." His characters are typical of the Englishmen and their elegant companions in long dresses who picnicked on the banks of the Thames on Thursday (4 July) to watch the rowing boats racing down the river.

The Regatta has the reputation of being one of the best in the world. This year 40 of the 200 entries were from abroad.

In the first round over a one mile 550 yard (2.11 kms) course, Antwerpse RV of Belgium beat the Lady Margaret Boat club from Cambridge by 32 lengths. The Dutch team GFR Aegir beat the British Bedford Rowing Club by 3 2/3 lengths in 7 minutes 25 seconds. An American team, from Santa Clara University, also rowed to victory in the first round against a British team from Reading university.

Last year seven of the 12 trophies went to overseas teams, and the British are not too optimistic about their chances this year.
