    Background: Saigon students last night (Thursday) burned President Nixon in effigy as they protested over the fatal shooting of a 12-year-old boy by an American soldier in the port city of Qui Nhon.

    About 200 students attended a protest meeting in a school compound. As bonfires burned, one student leader threatened that unless the soldier concerned was handed over to the Vietnamese they would attack American Army trucks.

    Already one American truck has been destroyed when it was get on fire during two days of rioting in Qui Nhon itself following the shooting last Monday.

    When the students tried to march out of the compound, police blocked their way. They then set fire to the effigy and the police fired tear-gas to break u p the demonstration.

    22 students were injured and one arrest was made.
