  • Description

One hundred and forty-three North Vietnamese were killed in at battle with US Helicopter gunships last Wednesday (July 8) near Khe Sanh, in South Vietnam about five miles (8 kms), from the Laotian border, according to U.S. Command.

Since the U.S. Marines abandoned their base at Khe Sanh, 18 months ago, the area has been patrolled by helicopter gunships of the 101st Airborne Division. On Wednesday about 250 North Vietnamese soldiers were spotted in the open by a patrolling helicopter which called for assistance.

Twenty helicopters were sent in and they raked the area with gunfire and rockets for about eight hours. The American Command reported that Government troops found the bodies of 143 North Vietnamese soldiers after the battle.

One wounded North Vietnamese soldier who was captured said that they were moving into the area from Laos. The Americans consider the area around Khe Sanh -- in the northernmost Quang Tri province -- as a traditional staging post for enemy troops.
