  • Description

THE APOLLO 10 LUNAR EXPLORERS PARACHUTED TO A PERFECT LANDING IN THE PACIFIC YESTERDAY (MONDAY) TO CLIMAX A VOYAGE OF DISCOVERY THAT PAVED THE WAY FOR MAN TO LAND ON THE MOON. THE UNITED STATES WILL ATTEMPT TO LAND MEN ON THE MOON IN JULY.

THE U.S.'S NEWEST HEROES ENDED MAN'S MOST DANGEROUS SPACE ADVENTURE WHEN THEIR STURDY SIX-TON SPACECRAFT SPLASHED INTO ROLLING SEAS WITHIN SIGHT OF THE HELICOPTER CARRIER U.S.S. PRINCETON, ABOUT 400 MILES EAST OF PAGO PAGO (AMERICAN SAMOA).

WITH TELEVISION CAMERAS RELAYING THE SPLASHDOWN AND RECOVERY TO EUROPE, THE PACIFIC, AND THE U.S., THOMAS STAFFORD, EUGENE CERNAN AND JOHN YOUNG LANDED JUST THREE MILES FROM THE CARRIER. THE PINPOINT LANDING WAS A FITTING END TO THE NEAR-FLAWLESS EIGHT-DAY FLIGHT, WHICH WAS A FINAL DRESS REHEARSAL FOR TWO ASTRONAUTS TO WALK ON THE MOON'S SURFACE WITHIN TWO MONTHS.

WHEN RESCUE SWIMMERS DROPPED FROM HOVERING HELICOPTERS AND REACHED THE CAPSULE, THOMAS STAFFORD SAID: "THANKS FOR BEING HERE. WE'RE IN GREAT SHAPE." THE ASTRONAUTS WERE IN GOOD SPIRITS AND SEEMED HEALTHY AS THEY STEPPED ONTO THE DECK OF THE PRINCETON.
