  • Description

CONTINUING THEIR PREPARATIONS FOR THE FORTHCOMING WORLD FOOTBALL CUP TOURNAMENT, GROUP TWO FINALISTS WEST GERMANY GAVE AN UNIMPRESSIVE PERFORMANCE WHEN BEATING ROUMANIA 1 - 0 BEFORE A CAPACITY CROWD OF 62,000 IN LUDWIGSHAVEN.

THE FAST MOVING RUMANIANS WHO PLAYED A 4-2-4 COMBINATION MOVED THE BALL FREELY THROUGHOUT THE FIRST HALF AND CAME CLOSE TO SCORING IN THE 38TH MINUTE WHEN A POWERFUL SHOT BOUNCED OFF THE GOALPOST WITH THE GERMAN 'KEEPER WELL BEATEN.

ON THE FIRST-CLASS TURF, THE RUMANIANS SPEED SET A TOUGH PACE FOR THE GERMANS WHO LEFT THE FIELD AT HALF TIME TO THE JEERING WHISTLE OF THEIR OWN SUPPORTERS.

THE OBVIOUS DISSATISFACTION OF THE CROWD HAD ITS EFFECT ON THE WEST GERMAN SQUAD. SPEARHEADED BY UWE SEELER - THE CRACK CENTRE-FORWARD ON WHOM MUCH OF THE WEST GERMAN WORLD CUP HOPES MUST DEPEND - THE HOME SIDE MOVED STRONGLY INTO THE GAME AND FINALLY DOMINATED PLAY DESPITE USING THE OLDER 5-3-2 COMBINATION.

MUCH OF THEIR DEFENSIVE STRENGTH CAME FROM FULL-BACK SCHNELLINGER-27-YEAR-OLD VETERAN OF THE 1962 WEST GERMAN WORLD CUP TEAM - AND 31-YEAR-OLD HORST SZYMANIAK, ANOTHER OUTSTANDING VETERAN OF THE 1962 SQUAD.

BUT IT WAS SEELER WHO DOMINATED UP FRONT IN THE NUMBER NINE JERSEY. AFTER THE GERMAN GOALKEEPER HANS TILKOWSKI HAD MADE A FINE SAVE, THE GERMAN FORWARDS SWEPT THROUGH TO FORCE A FREE KICK IN THE RUMANIAN HALF.

THE BALL SLIPPED PAST THE RUMANIAN BARRIED OF PLAYERS, LOTHAR ULSASS TRAPPED AND SAW SEELER IN A DANGEROUS POSITION. HE SLIPPED THE BALL ACROSS AND SEELER FINALLY BEAT THE OUTSTANDING RUMANIAN GOALKEEPER.

THE GAME WILL HAVE GIVEN SCANT ENCOURAGEMENT TO THE HOME SIDE WHO ARE SCHEDULED TO MEET ARGENTINE, SPAIN AND SWITZERLAND IN THEIR WORLD CUP GROUP.

BUT THE WEST GERMANS HOPE TO MIX AN EXPLOSIVE BREW OF YOUTH, EXPERIENCE AND VERSATILITY IN THE TEAM THEY SEND TO LONDON. A TEAM THAT CARRIES THE HOPES OF THE LAST EUROPEAN NATION TO WIN THE WORLD CUP - A FEAT THEY PERFORMED IN 1954 WHEN THEY DEFEATED HUNGARY IN THE FINAL IN BERNE, SWITZERLAND.
