  • Description

THE STUDENT MOVEMENT IN PARIS IS DIVIDED TODAY AND THOUSANDS OF ITS MEMBERS FACE THE PROSPECT OF ENDING THEIR UNIVERSITY LIFE WITHOUT A DEGREE OR OF SPENDING ANOTHER YEAR IN STUDY. RED FLAGS ARE FLYING OVER THE BUILDINGS OF THE SORBONNE FOR THE THIRD SUCCESSIVE DAY.

A REPORT FROM PARIS SAID THAT ALL SEMBLANCE OF AUTHORITY HAD VANISHED FROM THE SORBONNE AND THERE WERE SIGNS OF DWINDLING PUBLIC SUPPORT FOR THE MILITANT STUDENTS. THE STUDENTS FACE THEIR END-OF-THE-YEAR EXAMINATIONS IN JUNE.

THE STUDENTS ARE DIVIDED NOT ONLY ON THE QUESTION OF WHETHER EXAMINATIONS SHOULD BE HELD, BUT ON WHAT FORM THEY SHOULD TAKE IF THEY ARE. FACULTY AFTER FACULTY HAS PROCLAIMED AUTONOMY FROM GOVERNMENT CONTROL AND STUDENT CROWDS OCCUPIED CLASSROOMS AND LECTURE HALLS IN A NON-STOP DEBATE OF THE UNIVERSITY'S FUTURE.

THE PARIS GOVERNMENT HAS SO FAR BOWED TO ALMOST ALL STUDENT DEMANDS, INCLUDING THE REMOVAL OF RIOT POLICE FROM THE LATIN QUARTER, THE FREEING OF DEMONSTRATORS IN LAST WEEK'S STREET BATTLES, AND THE RE-OPENING OF FACULTIES. THE STUDENTS HAVE OPENLY CHALLENGED THE GOVERNMENT FOR THE DISMIALL OF THE MINISTER OF THE INTERIOR, CHRISTIAN FOUCHET, AND THE POLICE CHIEF, MAURICE GRIMAUD.
