  • Description

The cold weather that swept Europe in recent weeks has also brought snow to parts of North Africa, in particular the highlands of Algeria.

In Medea, a town about 50 miles (80 kms) South West of Algiers, a thick carpet of snow covered streets and made getting about uncommonly difficult on Sunday (3 January).

Mosques and trees in the town received a coating of snow and the local street cleaners had to shovel the pavements clear.

Medea is a popular resort centre, but the cold weather quickly closed down local restaurants. The town's womenfolk were well wrapped up for the weather conditions.

One of the areas major products is oranges -- and the groves were blanketed with snow. An unusual sight -- with orchardists hoping the fall wouldn't harm the fruit.
