  • Description

A special train from Elizabethville in the Belgian Congo, to Ndola, Northern Rhodesia, carried nearly 200 people, mainly women and children, June 27, who wish to be outside the country during the independence celebrations which start June 30.

On arrival at Ndola most of the passengers said they were not running away from their homes but taking a holiday. Some expressed the thought that tribal warfare between Africans, in Congo's northern provinces, may break out.

For the past few months many residents of the Congo have left for Belgium by air and sea, fearing they may be caught up in disturbances caused by Africans whose leaders have not been given posts in Premier Patrice Lumumba's first cabinet.
