    A 40-TON SEGMENT OF THE AIR FORCE'S MIGHTIEST SOLID-PROPELLANT ROCKET HAS COMPLETED A 400-MILE RIDE TO THE MOJAVE DESERT. THE BIG ROCKET SEGMENT IS THE FIRST OF MANY TO BE PRODUCED AND SHIPPED BY UNITED TECHNOLOGY CENTRE FOR STATIC TEST-FIRING AT THE AIR FORCE'S ROCKET PROPULSION LABORATORY AT EDWARDS, CALIFORNIA. THE TESTS WILL BE CARRIED OUT AS PART UTC's CONTRACT WITH THE AIR FORCE TO PRODUCE THE BOOSTER STAGE OF THE TITAN 11-C SPACE LAUNCH VEHICLE.

    THE 10-FOOT BY 10-FOOT SEGMENT WAS LOADED INTO A STEEL CONTAINER EQUIPPED WITH AIR CONDITIONING UNITS AND PLACED ABOARD A 90-FOOT LONG, 49-WHEEL, TRUCK-TRAILER RIG. FIVE OF THESE SEGMENTS WILL BE MATED WITH END CLOSURES AND A NOZZLE TO FORM PAIRS OF BOOSTER ROCKETS WHICH WILL GIVE THE TITAN III-C LIFTOFF THRUST OF MORE THAN 2 MILLION POUNDS. THE ROCKET'S ARRIVAL MEANT THAT THE NATION'S BIGGEST SOLID-PROPELLANT ROCKET BOOSTER PROGRAMME WAS ON SCHEDULE. LATER SHIPMENTS TO CAPE KENNEDY, WHERE FLIGHT TESTS OF THE TITAN II-C WILL BEGIN EARLY NEXT YEAR, WILL BE BY TRAIN DIRECT TO THE ASSEMBLY AND LAUNCHING COMPLEX.
