  • Description

United Nations Secretary-General, U Thant, has described the latest Middle East peace initiatives as a "real chance to make important advances" for peace in the region. But, he warned, in a statement on developments expected to lead to indirect Arab-Israel negotiations, that over optimism should be avoided.

In a cautious statement the Secretary-General said that in such situations there was often a tendency for some to expect too much too soon.

U Thant said Dr. Gunnar Jarring, the United Nations Middle East negotiator, was now engaged in intensive consultations and was ready to undertake all that may be required of him.

The Secretary-General promised the United Nations would provide any other assistance whenever it was called upon.
