THE GABONESE PRESIDENT, LEON MBA AND HIS VICE-PRESIDENT, ALBERT BONGO, WERE TODAY (THURSDAY) SWORN-IN AT A CEREMONY IN PARIS CONDUCTED BY THE SPEAKER OF GABON'S NATIONAL ASSEMBLY, M. GEORGES DAMAS. PRESIDENT MBA WAS RE-ELECTED IN LAST MONTH'S GENERAL ELECTION.

TODAY'S CEREMONY TOOK PLACE IN PARIS, IN THE GABONESE EMBASSY, AS THE PRESIDENT IS IN THE FRENCH CAPITAL CONVALESCING FROM A RECENT ILLNESS. HE HAS BEEN IN PARIS FOR SEVERAL WEEKS, AND HIS VICE-PRESIDENT ARRIVED THERE EARLIER THIS WEEK.

LATER TODAY, PRESIDENT MBA, ACCOMPANIED BY THE VICE-PRESIDENT, CALLED ON PRESIDENT DE GAULLE AT THE ELYSEE PALACE IN PARIS. AFTER THE VISIT, PRESIDENT MBA SAID THAT GENERAL DE GAULLE WAS A FRIEND OF THE AFRICANS, AND IF THEY WERE INDEPENDENT, THEY OWED IT TO HIM.

PRESIDENT MBA DID NOT TAKE PART IN THE ELECTORAL CAMPAIGN, BUT LAST MONTH THE INTERIOR MINISTER SAID THAT 99 POINT SIX PER CENT OF THE GABONESE ELECTORATE HAD VOTED FOR HIS RE-ELECTION.
