  • Description

AN ITALIAN-BUILT FIAT ABARTH DRIVEN FROM WARSAW BY TWO POLES, LONGIN BIELAK AND SOBIESLAW ZASADA, WAS THE FIRST CAR TO REACH MONTE CARLO TODAY, (TUESDAY), IN THE 2,700 MILES (4,340 KMS), MOTOR RALLY. THEY DROVE THEIR CAR ACROSS THE FINISH LINE ON SCHEDULE AFTER THE DIFFICULT OVERNIGHT RUN ACROSS THE VOSGES AND JURA MOUNTAINS FROM RHEIMS.

AT RHEIMS, LAST NIGHT, ALL BUT 22 OF THE 299 CREWS WHO SET OUT ON THE RALLY CLOCKED IN, INCLUDING 27 WHICH STARTED FROM GLASGOW. HOWEVER, THE FINAL STRETCH TOOK ITS TOLL. A NINE CAR SMASH BETWEEN THE SAINT CLAUDE AND LE POIZAT CHECKPOINTS PUT THREE CARS OUT OF THE COMPETITION. ALTHOUGH THE SIX OTHER VEHICLES WERE ABLE TO CONTINUE.

THICK FOG AND ICEY ROADS OVER THE MOUNTAINS ON THE 500 MILES (800 KMS) TESTING STRETCH FROM SAINT CLAUDE TO MONTE CARLO CAUSED MANY CREWS TO RETIRE. ESTIMATES PUT THE NUMBER OF RETIREMENTS AT MORE THAN 100 AFTER THE URIAGE CHECKPOINT, HALF-WAY BETWEEN SAINT CLAUDE AND MONTE CARLO, CLOSED EARLY THIS MORNING.

AT MONTE CARLO, OFFICIALS AT THE FINISH LINE SAID THAT THEY DID NOT EXPECT MORE THAN TWO HUNDRED CARS TO ACTUALLY FINISH.

MOST DRIVERS COMMENTED THAT THE FIRST THREE DAYS OF THE RALLY HAD NOT PUT ANY SEVERE PRESSURE ON CREWS OR VEHICLES AND SAID THAT OVERALL CONDITIONS WOULD GIVE A BIG ADVANTAGE TO THE MORE POWERFUL CARS.

AMONG THOSE TO FINISH AT MONTE CARLO WERE THE FIVE RUSSAIN ENTRIES. BUT THEY WERE SO FAR BEHIND SCHEDULE THAT IT WAS DOUBTFUL WHETHER OFFICIALS WOULD CREDIT THEM.
