  • Description

NYASALAND - AND THOUSANDS OF EXCITED AFRICANS GATHER AT A MOCK CEREMONY TO BURN A COFFIN REPRESENTING THE END OF THE CENTRAL AFRICAN FEDERATION. IN BANNER-WAVING PROCESSION THEY CARRIED THE COFFIN TO A RALLY ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF BLANTYRE, THE CAPITAL YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) - THE DAY AFTER THE FEDERATION FORMALLY BROKE UP.

DR. BANDA, THE NYASALAND PRIME MINISTER, WATCHED THE BLAZE, THEN HE TOLD HIS CHEERING SUPPORTERS THAT NYASALAND'S SECESSION FROM THE FEDERATION HAD BEEN ACHIEVED BY "UNITY AND DISCIPLINE."
HE APPEALED TO ALL TO WORK HARDER FOR THE FUTURE. "SELF-GOVERNMENT, SECESSION AND INDEPENDENCE ARE NOT THE END OF TROUBLES," HE SAID. "THERE ARE DIFFICULT YEARS AHEAD."
WITH TEARS IN HIS EYES, HE ADDED: "LET ME MAKE IT QUITE CLEAR THAT I MEAN TO RULE... CALL IT DICTATORSHIP IF YOU LIKE. I'M GOING TO ALLOW NO STUPID, AMBITIOUS FOOL TO DESTROY WHAT! HAVE BUILT UP."
(NYASALAND BECOMES INDEPENDENT NEXT JULY, AND WILL BE KNOWN AS MALAWI.)
