  • Description

Some of the United States' leading professional basketball players took a tumble in Ljbuljana, Yugoslavia, on Saturday (17 May) when they met their host country's best players in a match. The U.S. team lost the game 109-90.

The Yugoslavs' performance was remarkable from the start. They shot into an unassailable lead, thanks to the strong defence put up by Cosic, now rated as Yugoslavia's best player.

Cosic, who studied in the United States, played on American college teams for a long spell before returning to Yugoslavia.

SYNOPSIS: This was the start of the second half of a match between a selection of the best basketball players from the United States and Yugoslavia in Ljubljana on Saturday.

More than five thousand spectators turned up and packed the huge Ljubljana Tivoli Hall. The secretary of the Central Committee of Yugoslav Union of Communists, Mr. Stane Dolanc, was among those in the front row. He is said to be an avid sport fan, particularly of basketball.

The American players -- in white--included top personalities McDaniels (number twelve). Yugoslavia matched the interesting and strong line-up with an equally impressive team which included Kicanovic (number five), Dalibasic (number eleven). The three of them asserted Yugoslavia's lead right from the start.

As the game progressed, the Americans slipped further behind. But the setback did not deter them from trying to bridge the gap. And they ended with a score of ninety to one hundred and nine. The American team is due to play in more games against the Yugoslavs during their stay in the country.
