    Sundances Vice-President Abel El-Eir said in Khartoum on Monday (21 February) that Sudan had mobilised all available resources to solve the long-standing problem of the three southern provinces. He was speaking at the opening of a conference on refuges relief and rehabilitation.

    The dispute between northern and southern Sudan has been going on since 1955 when the largely African south rose against Arab rule in the north. Through Government troops crushed the rebellion, southern secessionists have carried on their struggle to rasure a separate state which they call "Azanis".

    Mr. El-Eir said at the conference opening that about 60,000 southern Sudanese refugees had returned from neighbouring countries since 1969. In addition, he said, about 40,000 have come out of hiding in the bush. Mr. El-Eir urged conference delegates to study the problems of rehabilitation and to seek shout ways and means by which they could participate in what he termed "This humanitarian task of such huge proportions".
