  • Description

THE REPUBLIC OF TOGO BECAME INDEPENDENT ON APRIL 27, 1960, AFTER A VARIED HISTORY. IT WAS A GERMAN PROTECTORATE FROM 1894 TO 1914. IT WAS THEN DIVIDED BETWEEN BRITAIN AND FRANCE, AND BECAME A MANDATE OF THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS IN 1922. THE UNITED NATIONS MADE IT A TRUSTEESHIP TERRITORY IN DECEMBER 1946.

IN 1956 A PLEBISCITE CALLED FOR THE TERRITORY TO BE MADE AN AUTONOMOUS REPUBLIC WITHIN THE FRENCH UNION.

PRESIDENT NICOLAS GRUNITSKY, A FORMER PRIME MINISTER, CAME TO OFFICE AFTER PRESIDENT SYLVANUS OLYMPIO - HIS BROTHER-IN-LAW - WAS ASSASSINATED BY DISSIDENT MEMBERS OF THE ARMY IN JANUARY 1963.

THE REPUBLIC OF TOGO COVERS ABOUT EIGHT THOUSAND SQUARE MILES (56-THOUSAND SQUARE KILOMETRES) AND HAS A POPULATION EXCEEDING ONE AND A HALF MILLION.

THE REPUBLIC'S COMMERCE RELIES MAINLY ON AGRICULTURE, PARTICULARLY VALUABLE CROPS OF COFFEE, COCOA, PALM OIL, COPRA, GROUNDNUTS AND COTTON.

THERE IS ALSO A PROSPERING MINING INDUSTRY, ESTABLISHED IN 1953 WHEN VAST DEPOSITS OF PHOSPHATE AND BAUXITE WERE DISCOVERED.
