  • Description

ABOUT 400 PEOPLE OF CHINESE EXTRACTION HAVE BEEN MOVED OUT OF THE BORNEO TOWN OF TEBEDU, CLOSE TO THE SARAWAK BORDER WITH INDONESIA. GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS SAY THAT THE COMPULSORY MOVE WAS NECESSARY BECAUSE THE CHINESE HAVE FAILED TO CO-OPERATE WITH THE SECURITY FORCES. SARAWAK LIKE THE REST OF MALAYSIA, HAS BEEN THE TARGET FOR "CONFRONTATION" BY INDONESIA SINCE 1963. TEBEDU, SOUTH OF THE CAPITAL TOWN OF KUCHING, WAS THE FIRST PLACE TO BE ATTACKED IN APRIL 1963.

IN ADDITION TO MEETING INDONESIAN "CONFRONTATION", THE SARAWAK SECURITY FORCES WORK ALSO AGAINST AN UNDERGROUND COMMUNIST ORGANISATION. COMMUNISTS RETURNING FROM INDONESIAN BORNEO INTO SARAWAK, WHERE, IT IS ALLEGED, THEY WERE TRAINED IN SUBVERSION, WERE SAID TO HAVE BEEN GIVEN FOOD, SHELTER AND INFORMATION BY CHINESE IN THE TEBEDU AREA.

THE EVACUEES, MOST OF THEM FARMERS AND SHOPKEEPERS, WERE MOVED BY MALAYSIAN ARMY TRUCKS TO TWO NEWLY-BUILT VILLAGES CLOSER TO KUCHING. THE VILLAGES ARE SURROUNDED BY HIGH WIRE FENCES.

FOUR CHINESE SHOPKEEPERS HAVE BEEN ALLOWED TO REMAIN IN TEBEDU, TO SERVE THE LARGE NATIVE DYAK POPULATION.

BEFORE "CONFRONTATION", TEBEDU WAS AN IMPORTANT TRADING CENTRE WITH INDONESIA. TODAY, IT IS ALMOST A GHOST TOWN. NOW, ONLY NATIVES MAY LIVE IN THE TOWN AND AREA WITHOUT GOVERNMENT PERMISSION.
