  • Description

Gymnastics...and the Olympic Champion, Nadia Comaneci of Rumania won a "Champions-All" event at London's Wembley Arena on Saturday (7 April). The men's event was won by Andrei Popov of the Soviet Union. His closest challenger was Peter Kormann of the United States.

SYNOPSIS: Nadia Comaneci stunned the Gymnastic world in the 1976 Montreal Olympics when, as a tiny fourteen-year-old, she scored maximum marks in seven exercises during her individual team performances.

The Rumanian star has grown and put on weight, but at seventeen, she was back to her near best. Comaneci is said to stand an excellent chance of winning the European Championships in Copenhagen next month, and defending her Olympic title in Moscow, next year.

Peter Kormann, a twenty-three year-old from Connecticut in the United States, was the winner of the Daily Mirror "Champions-All" in 1976.

Korman proved to be a serious challenge to Andrei Popov, and beat him in the floor and parallel bar events. His final score was 55-point-75.

Popov finished first in the pommel horse, scoring nine to Kormann's 8-point-90. He also beat him in the rings, vault and high bar events. His final score was 55-point-95. Popov will be a member of the Soviet Union's Olympic squad at the 1980 Olympics in Moscow. In the women's event, the Soviet Union's Elena Naimushina came second, and Hungary's Andrea Horacsek was third.
