  • Description

THE NORSE CONQUEST OF THE ISLE OF MAN WAS RE-ENACTED THIS WEEK (TUESDAY) DURING THE ISLAND GOVERNMENT'S ANNUAL VIKING FESTIVAL. IN AN ELABORATE TABLEAU STAGED FOR THE FESTIVAL, BEARDED "VIKINGS" SURPRISED AND SUBDUED THE CELTIC INHABITANTS WHEN THEY INVADED THE ISLAND IN A FLEET OF LONGSHIPS.

THE RE-ENACTMENT, AT PEEL, IS THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE TRADITIONAL MANX NATIONAL WEEK - THE TIME OF YEAR WHEN THE LAWS OF THE ISLE OF MAN ARE PROMULGATED DURING AN OPEN-AIR CEREMONY AT TYNWALD HILL, ST. JOHN'S.

RESIDENTS OF PEEL DRESSED IN REALISTIC VIKING OR CELTIC COSTUMES FOR TUESDAY'S CEREMONY. THE SCENE WAS SET ON THE BEACH - GIRLS ARE WEAVING HOMESPUN MATERIAL, CHILDREN KINDLING THE FIRE, WOMEN BAKING BREAD.

THE LONGSHIPS APPROACH THE BEACH, AND AFTER A BRIEF SKIRMISH, SUBDUE THE CELTS.

A VIKING JARL KILLED IN BATTLE IS CARRIED TO THE WATER'S EDGE BY ODIN'S WAR MAIDENS, THE VALKYRIES. THE DEAD KING IS PLACED ABOARD A SMALL "GIG", WHICH IS SET ALIGHT AND PUSHED OUT TO SEA.

ABOUT 50 YEARS AFTER THE CONQUEST - IN THE LATE EIGHTH CENTURY A.D - THE CELTIC AND NORSE PEOPLE UNIFIED TO BECOME THE MANX OR SUDREYAN PEOPLE. THE TABLEAU DEPICTS THE ELECTION OF A NEW KING OF THE UNITED RACES.
