Background: Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) leader Yasser Arafat met with West Bank Palestinian representatives in Amman on February 28 to co-ordinate their approaches towards a Middle East peace arrangement. The West Bank delegates, had been formally enjoined by Israeli West Bank and Gaza Strip authorities from meeting Arafat, but the Palestinian group, led by Bethlehem's Mayor Elias Freij, said it was essential that King Hussein and the PLO chief reach an agreement. Arafat, in Jordan for five days of intensive discussions with the King and other leaders, was also guest of honor at a military parade near the Jordanian capital, and watched soldiers undergoing rigorous training and hand-to-hand combat exercises. After the march-past, the PLO leader addressed the troops and assembled guests, which included the Commander-in-Chief of Jordan's armed forces, Lieutenant-General Sherif Zaid Bin Shaker.
