  • Description

Seventy-two passengers were rescued by helicopter form cable cars high above the French city of Grenoble on Saturday (18 September).

SYNOPSIS: Several spherical cabins, each holding six people, were immobilized 60 metres (about 180 feet) up on a newly installed line -- when three cable cars, also with passengers onboard, became unhooked lower down the line.

Rescue workers quickly identified the trouble with the unhooked cars -- wires jerking out of place. Helicopters then flew in firemen to deal with the problem.

The first passengers released were in the lower cable cars. The rescue team managed to rehook the cars onto the cable line and return them to ground level.

The passengers were trapped for six hours. The incident happened on the Alpine cableway form Grenoble to the Bastille Mountain. The police said the task of rescuing the passengers nearer the ground was relatively easy. However, helicopters had to be used to take off those near the mountain top.

Officials explained there was no other was down except by air 1st those stranded higher up the line. Those trapped said later it was a hair raising experience.

The Grenoble authorities announced soon after the incident that an inquiry would be held into how the cars became unhooked form the cableway power line. According to officials the cars jammed once before -- during tests carried out before the cableway was opened. There are no immediate explanation as to how the latest incident happened.

It's the latest in a series of accidents involving cable cars this year. The worst was last March in Italy where 42 people died when the traction cable of their car became entangled with the cabin's support line.
