    Senor Francisco Mendes, Prime Minister of the new West African state of Guinea-Bissau, arrived in the Soviet Union on Wednesday (19 February) for the first top-level talks between the two countries since the African nation's independence from Portugal.

    The Guinean party was met at Sheremetievo Airport by Soviet Prime Minister Alexei Kosygin and the Secretary of the Soviet Communist Party's Central Committee, Boris Ponomaryev.

    Talks between the two countries are expected to lead to the signing of documents of co-operation.

    Senor Mendes leads the African Party of Independence of Guinea and the Cape Verde Island (PAIGC), which was supplied with arms by the Soviet Union during the independence struggle.
