VISNEWS filmed, June 15, bomb damage at Santry Dublin cycle stadium. Painters had a few hours before put the finishing touches to this new sports arena. The empty stadium vibrated as several bombs exploded in the dressing rooms, stands and on the track at about midnight.
When dawn came builders inspected the damage. In the centre of the track was a 20 feet wide hole. The same evening an international cycle rating programme was to be staged. Throughout the day labourers worked on the damage and with little time to spare the stadium was again in proper order.
Rivalry between two Irish cycling and athletic associations was thought to be the cause of this sabotage. One of the associations has branches in Northern Ireland. Extremists, shunning and dealings with the British, are alleged to have planted the bombs.
