  • Description

At the United Nations the first world assembly on disarmament since 1932, and the biggest ever, was adjourned on Saturday (1 July) after approving new guidelines for trying to curb the 400 billion-dollar-a-year arms race. Delegates at the 149-nation special session of the General Assembly adopted by consensus a final document containing a programme of act on. However some members expressed reservations during the debate including the Egyptian ambassador, Mr. Hussein Abbas.

SYNOPSIS: The main achievement of the five and a half week session was the establishment of a new, expanded disarmament committee to carry forward negotiations which reports say have made little progress in the existing 31-nation Geneva conference. The Chinese ambassador, Mr. Chen Chu, directed his comments in the debate to the Soviet Union.

Mr. Chu said the Soviet Union was trying all its tricks by putting forward suggestions to control nuclear weapons in order to maintain its superiority. He said that it was an easy ploy to see through. The session was described by observers as tense.

The next speaker was the United States delegate, Mr. James Leonard.

The debate's chairman, Yugoslavian ambassador Mr. Mojjov, closed the session and said it had been an extremely useful debate.
