  • Description

Inhabitants of Manila, capital city of the Philippine Islands salvaged belongings and prepared to start life again, after floods and tidal waves receded leaving 115 people dead and 15,000 homeless, May 29. The disasters were triggered off by earthquake in Chile, over 9,000 miles away.

Most deaths occurred in squatter areas along river banks, where swollen currents swept flimsy shacks away; in one settlement, all 115 shanties were uprooted before inhabitants could get clear; some shanties were carried up the river bank, others - with people inside - were born downstream.

A total of 166 people have been killed in the Philippines, and property damage is estimated at over 2 million dollars.
