  • Description

Portugal's Foreign Minister Mario Soares arrived in New Delhi on Friday (27 December) to end, what was described as "a bitter episode in the history of India".

Dr. Soares' visit is expected to heal a long-standing dispute over three tiny former Portuguese enclaves on the Indian mainland. It is also expected to result in the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, which were broken in 1955.

The Portuguese Foreign Minister is scheduled to sign a treaty formally placing the three enclaves -- Goa, Diu and Daman -- under India's sovereignty next Tuesday (31 December). India sent her troops into the enclaves in 1961.

Shortly after his arrival, Dr. Soares visited the Memorial of Mahatma Gandhi. He later met the Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, for talks, and also called at President Ahmed's residence.
